The Bystander Effect – What, Why, How | Chennai NGO

Bystander Effect… in Effect. Let’s meet Akshay, his day is about to get much crazier. He’s just finished college and is on the way home. However, just as he was about to climb into the bus, he heard a loud crash, followed by the smell of burning rubber. Akshay stepped back from the bus and walked over to the accident site unfolding nearby, which was already surrounded by people. It looked bad, the car seemed to have hit a bike, and the biker looked to be unconscious. While the scene lay before his eyes, he wondered “I should probably try to help” but the moment he tried to take a step, his mind wandered “Wait, if someone else is helping, wouldn’t I be in the way? What would I even do!? What will these people think if I just try to help with no knowledge or training?” He looked around, no one stepped forward to help, what was going on? It had been fifteen minutes, and no one had moved. Luckily by this time, the ambulance had arrived because the hospital was nearby. And who had called th

7 Common First Aid Myths and Facts | Emergency care

First-aid is a very common topic that many keep talking about or refer to in their conversations. However, how many of them actually know what exactly is first aid and the various steps in first aid? First aid is an immediate and short-term solution for any accident. Going wrong in this might make things worse or fatal. Here are common first aid myths and facts that everyone should know: Burn Myth 1. Grab some butter for those burns Many people suggest grabbing a dash of butter to treat a burning wound. This can only lead to complications as the grease from the butter will not help the wound heal. Instead, if you come across a burn, run it under cold water and cover it loosely with a light cotton cloth. If you find the burn blistering, seek medical advice. Sprain Myth 2. Heat on your sprain It is often said to relieve your sprained areas by applying a hot pack on it. While this might give temporary relief, it can cause more swelling. The best thing to do if you sprained your arm, leg,

Why Is First Aid Necessary for Schools in India? | NGOs in India

Every life counts Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. It was only a couple of years ago in 2019 when a toddler in a play school in Washermenpet, died of choking while eating. If only the teachers were aware of basic first-aid, they could have saved the child. He was however declared dead to the hospital. These events are small yet tragic. Every life matters no matter the age. Be it a child, a middle-aged person, or a senior citizen, irrespective of the profession, needs a helping hand in case of emergencies. In India alone, close to 150,000 people succumb to accidents every year. While road accidents are one side of the coin, accidents happening in schools, or while consuming food, while playing, even with some underlying health issue, all matter. We often come across news articles that talk about school kids losing their lives in unexpected events. This could be because of anything. Some of them may be getting hurt while playing or during heavy sports or an underlying healt
